Dear Parents,

I look forward to an exciting and productive school year as I strive to provide the best possible instruction for all my students. Research shows that students who have backup at home make the biggest learning gains. Please help your student to achieve success!

I have prepared a “supplies” list that consists of a few essential items (all available at grocery and/or drug stores) that I will include at the bottom of this letter. I have also required that each student bring to class (every day!) a novel of high personal interest. Please make sure that your student fulfills this requirement by allowing him or her to have access to libraries and bookstores.

Homework will consist of: a 20-minute reading assignment (Mon., Tue. Wed., Thru.) and a weekend hands-on activity. Benchmark testing will follow the schedule set by Broward County along with a Friday test on class work (and vocabulary) from the preceding week. Make-up tests will be given the following Friday (one time only). The students will have “pop-quizzes” occasionally. There will be no make up for those so attendance is important. These scores will be available online. You can also check other assessments along with your students “class participation” grade which will reflect academic as well as personal behavior and self-control within the classroom.
